REFORM your PRACTICE!! #Pilateschallenge15 N 18 Long Back Stretch Last in the Long Stretch series, the long back stretch asks you to work to open the chest as you continue to lengthen the backside. Pro-tip🔑 Work to reach through the heels and flex the toes back as you drive the carriage out. Find the power to create this move not only from the upper body, but by scooping the Powerhouse and lengthening through the whole back body, keeping the chest open and the neck long. Enjoy! This move is a game changer. Always work to maintain a 2-way stretch through the torso to create strength through length. Pro-tip🔑 If you are trying this exercise on a reformer for the first time the best piece of advice I can give you is USE CONTROL. If you pull on the straps and use momentum without a strong powerhouse you will get a quick lesson in Contrology, probably by way of falling forward and hopefully breaking your fall before you make a crash landing. Once you have mastered the correct approach, you can delve into so many avenues of strengthening you will fall in love with The Chest Expansion. REFORM your PRACTICE!! #Pilateschallenge15 N 15 Pulling straps 💪🏻 This is a deceptive exercise because it looks "easy." But there are quite a few ideas at work here. Pro-tip: Working with control means no yanking and then sticking the landing. In this exercise you must control the momentum and press through to hold the lifted position and then again release with control. And there are a few other ideas at work here too. If you have a hyper mobile spine you don't get to sink into it to lift your upper torso- sorry! And If your spine is inflexible, you can't just lift your head by collapsing your neck either. The breathing pattern is inhale as you press back, and exhale as you release. Throughout the exercise maintain a deep scoop in your Powerhouse, a long neck, and continue to press your legs/ heels together to activate your seat. The ⬅️2 way stretch➡️ in the body is very active here: lengthen through the top of your head, as you reach out through your feet. Use length, to create strength. 💔 My issues I have a hyper mobile spine so I have to maintain a very deep scoop to avoid sinking into my hyper mobility. Press the carriage out, but not as far as you can, find a neutral spot where you have to work to keep the carriage still with your own power and control. C. Inhale as you roll up through your spine from tail bone to sternum working to hold the carriage still by pressing out as you role up. D. Return the carriage to the home position, exhaling deeply. Repeat then reverse. Pro-Tip🔑 Work for control, and maximum articulation. Avoid rushing and crashing the carriage in, but also work to close it all the way. This is also a breathing exercise designed to empty the lungs completely of air as you return the carriage home. As you place your fingertips on the wall you can approach the exercise 2 ways: A.You can start in a lifted and scooped position with a long back and flow into an arch as you reach up the wall breathing in, then returning to facing the wall exhale. (demonstrated by CotronePilates) or B. You can start with hands reaching up the wall with the body closer to the wall, and start your movement by gliding down and arching back as you exhale, then inhale as you reach back up the wall. (demonstrated by @laurabpilates) We recommend trying both and finding what feels right for your body. Pro-Tip: Work to keep your shoulders down and connected to the back. Try not to sink into your lower back, and keep your lower abdominal muscles pulled in and up. Don't forget to exhale as you stretch. REFORM your PRACTICE! #Pilateschallenge15 N 14 The Down Stretch👇 If you haven't seen the archival footage of Joeseph Pilates teaching this exercise by pressing down on Eve Gentry's head you might want to look into it. The Down Stretch focuses on stretching the front body while demonstrating control and strength through out the body. This is also a breathing exercise designed to empty the lungs completely of air as you return the carriage home. Pro-tip🔑 The advanced or "healthy lower back" version of this exercise is done with the pelvis practically touching the carriage on the push out, with the shoulders down and head maintaining a lifted position. However there are varying degrees of flexion that are perfectly acceptable in this exercise. As long as you can maintain a lower abdominal scoop, you can proceed with a deeper flexion in the lower spine. If you are simply sinking into your lower back with no connectivity in your lower abdomin, you will eventually find out why that lower scoop is so important. Additionally, your knees shouldn't be wider then your hips/shoulders. No spread eagle pelvic thrust here. 😱😬 My issues💔 My biggest issue here is keeping my heels connected to the shoulder rests.
