REFORM your PRACTICE!! #Pilateschallenge15 N 22 Twist🔄 This week we started with the most challenging version of this exercise, but you can look forward to seeing many other versions from us through out the week. The Twist is an advanced Pilates exercise shown here in a super advanced way. The twist is an excellent exercise to strengthen the entire body, while wringing out the lungs (and the sweat!) one side at a time. Pro-Tip🔑 The arm that leads and supports during this exercise is the side of the body that will be getting the most work. It can often challenge and reveal imbalances in the side body. Work to keep the shoulders down, the Powerhouse scooped, and the inner thighs engaged- and of course courage! those are the few things that might keep you from toppling over😜 🚫If you are trying this exercise for the first time with the bar up or down, use caution or better yet a spotter. Move with control and remember practice makes everything better:)🚫 My issues: My left side is weaker than my right, and it always seems to catch me off guard. I wanted for this challenge to be sure to practice (and soon post!) on both sides, and it was an awesome experience. Filming not only revealed how differently I perform the exercise on each side but through trial and error I was able to do it successfully on both sides. Join us for each #pilateschallenge15 wherever you are! #Pilateschallenge15 N 21 Footwork: Toes This is a fun and challenging version of the Reformer Footwork: Toes:) Rise up so you are up on the ball of the foot with the heels pressed together. Bend your knees keeping your Powerhouse engaged, your glutes squeezing tight, and your chest open, with a long back. Pro-tip🔑 Try not to release your seat and pitch forward in your upper body. REFORM your PRACTICE!! #Pilateschallenge15 N 21 Footwork: Toes "Toes" is the first exercise in the classical Pilates Reformer repertoire. It prepares you to reform your body. Pro-tip🔑 Whether you are the client or the teacher this is the beginning of what's to come. So let it ride. Prepare to the best of your ability: toes apart, heels lifted and pressed together, tummy in, shoulders down, and back of the neck long. Breathe in as you push out and out as you bring the carriage in. Repeat 10 times. I don't go in for over correcting unless there is no sense of control (smash, bang! Etc) or the client is visably struggling, if so drop a spring. What you see in the footwork, is your map to the rest of the lesson. My issues 💔 For me I am always working towards getting all my toes on the footbar 😂😂😂 and making sure my glutes are engaged. I tend to lose connection with my glutes so I strive to maintain that above all else. ✨ NOW your turn to share!! We had fun recreating this exercise while staying true to the intention of the exercise. Let us see your creativity with this move! Pro-tip🔑 Work to keep your chest open and your chin up while lifting the leg. My issues💔 I find it a challenge to lift my leg as high when seated, but it is a great way to strengthen the back and muscles used to lift the leg. Not to mention back of the arm toning! REFORM your PRACTICE!! #Pilateschallenge15 N 19 Balance Control Back This exercise embodies the statement "a whole body exercise" quite nicely. An advanced practitioners delight, but it can also be taught in modified segments that can ease a client into a fun and fabulous new exercise. Sometimes just stepping into the beginning position is enough for a strong but newer client to process. Pro-tip🔑 Once in position, work to maintain a long neck by pressing the shoulders down away from the ears. Continue the fight for good posture by keeping the chest open. When you are ready to move inhale as you press the carriage back. Exhale as you return. If you aren't ready to lift a leg, or do a fan kick- that's ok! Just repeat the movement of pressing the carriage out and in with control. Or try the dips for strengthening the triceps. My issues:💔 Usually I am pretty wrung out at this point in my routine so I am focusing on execution! I work to follow my breath to guide my controlwjile trying to maintain good form. Without the springs to pull you in you work a lot harder to return to the starting position, but you also need to control how far you go out so that you can make it back in😜 Pro-tip🔑 Make sure whatever prop you use is sturdy and low to the ground. My issues:💔 Strength flow and control while maintaining a long neck. 😘

REFORM your PRACTICE!! #Pilateschallenge15 N 18 Long Back Stretch Last in the Long Stretch series, the long back stretch asks you to work to open the chest as you continue to lengthen the backside. Pro-tip🔑 Work to reach through the heels and flex the toes back as you drive the carriage out. Find the power to create this move not only from the upper body, but by scooping the Powerhouse and lengthening through the whole back body, keeping the chest open and the neck long. Use the two-way-stretch to maintain lift and length throughout the whole body. My issues💔 My tight Achilles tendons crave this exercise but sometimes my toes don't cooperate😊 NOW your turn to share!! Join us for each #pilateschallenge15 wherever you are! #Pilateschallenge15 N 16 ➕ #matworkchallenge @russopilates Chest Expansion💨💨💨 The Chest Expansion is primarily a breathing exercise, but it is also useful for strengthening the neck, upper chest and back, arms, Powerhouse, gluten, hamstrings, ankles… ok that’s why we call it a whole body exercise. Enjoy! This move is a game changer. Always work to maintain a 2-way stretch through the torso to create strength through length. Pro-tip🔑 If you are trying this exercise on a reformer for the first time the best piece of advice I can give you is USE CONTROL. If you pull on the straps and use momentum without a strong powerhouse you will get a quick lesson in Contrology, probably by way of falling forward and hopefully breaking your fall before you make a crash landing. Once you have mastered the correct approach, you can delve into so many avenues of strengthening you will fall in love with The Chest Expansion.
